West Indies and world cricket’s most successful T20 batsman Chris Gayle has decided not to play in the fourth edition of Everest Premier League (EPL).
Gail was formally signed by Pokhara rhinos in January last year. After the EPL in March was postponed due to Corona, it was uncertain whether Gayle would participate. Pokhara rhinos director and former Nepalese cricketer Deepender Chowdhury confirmed that Gayle would not be coming.
He said that it is certain that Gayle will not come due to IPL and World Cup. “We are looking for a new overseas player. Not sure. It will be decided by this week which player is needed. We are trying to bring in star players of world cricket,” said Deepender.
“IPL, World Cup and EPL are at the same time. That’s why we are in a dilemma. All the players selected by Pokhara are in the World Cup squad. George Munshe will join the Scottish team. We are talking about whether Munshe will come or not. “Looking at the World Cup and the IPL, we will determine the last four overseas players,” he told Sports. Pokhara is currently in talks with 6.7 stars overseas.
In the 2018 season, Pokhara’s squad consisted of South African opener Richard Levy, Scotland’s captain Kyle Kotzer and England’s Paul Caglin. Pokhara was trailing by 5 wickets in 5 matches.
Last year, Gayle was asked to play in the EPL before playing in the IPL. But due to Corona, the EPL was postponed till the last stage. The fourth edition of the EPL is being held at TU Grounds from September 25 to October 9. The IPL is being held in the UAE from September 19 to October 15. The IPL was postponed last April after mid-season due to Corona. The T20 World Cup is being held in the UAE and Oman from October 17 to November 14. Due to which it has been decided that GAIL will not come to Nepal.
Gayle, associated with Kings XI Punjab, is also likely to be ruled out of the IPL. West Indies team is preparing for the World Cup. Many star players, including Gayle, are less likely to play in the IPL due to fitness, quarantine and preparations for the World Cup. He has played five consecutive T20 series against Australia and South Africa.
The four T20 series against Pakistan will start from Wednesday. Former champions West Indies are looking to win their third World Cup. The team has also been strengthened by the return of experienced players like Gayle and Dwayne Bravo. Gayle has completed 14,000 runs in T20 as well as series against Australia. The chances of players playing in the EPL are very less in the T20 World Cup.
On Monday, Kathmandu Kings XI signed Shahid Afridi, one of the best all-rounders in world cricket. EPL has intensified preparations. Pokhara had signed West Indies’ Kesrick Williamson and Scotland’s George Munshee last year. But Munshe is also unlikely to come because of the World Cup. Pokhara has players like wicketkeeper Binod Bhandari, Sunil Dhamala, Rit Gautam, Kishore Mahto, Bikram Shob, Bipin Khatri, Lokesh Bam, Prithu Baskota, Bibek Yadav and Bipin Rawal.
