India’s famous athlete Milkha Singh has died in a hospital in Chandigarh. He had become corona infected recently.
91-year-old Milkha Singh was admitted to PGIMER, Chandigarh after being infected with Corona, where his health deteriorated on Friday evening and he could not be saved even after many efforts.
Hospital spokesperson Ashok Kumar told The Gurkha Times that Milkha Singh died at 11.30 pm.
Milkha Singh was admitted to the ICU of PGIMER on June 3 due to Kovid infection, on 20 May, Kovid Sakkaran. He was admitted to the ICU till 13 June and during this time he defeated the Kovid infection. After being negative in the Kovid test on June 13, he had to be admitted again to the ICU due to difficulties related to Kovid. But despite all the efforts, the team of doctors could not save him.
Milkha Singh’s wife Nirmal Milkha Singh also died five days ago due to corona infection.
Popularly known as Flying Sikh
Milkha Singh, popularly known as the Flying Sikh, is the only Indian athlete to have won a gold medal in the 400 meters race in the Asian Games as well as the Commonwealth Games.
In the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games, Milkha Singh won the gold medals in the 200 meters and 400 meters, while in the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games, Milkha Singh won the gold medals in the 400 meters and four times in the 400 meters relay races.
In the 1958 Cardiff Commonwealth Games, Milkha Singh won the gold medal in the 440 gag race. But Milkha Singh got the most fame in 1960 Rome Olympics in which he missed the bronze medal in 400 meters race by a small margin.
In the Rome Olympics, Milkha Singh completed the 400 meters race in 45.73 seconds, he was behind German athlete Karl Kaufmann by a hundredth of a second, but this timing remained the national record for the next 40 years.
On the death of Milkha Singh, the great sportsperson of the Indian sports world, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted with a picture of himself with him in which he said that Milkha Singh will remain in the hearts of innumerable Indians.
He tweeted, “We have lost a great player in the passing away of Shri Milkha Singh Ji. He had a special place in the hearts of countless people. His inspiring personality inspired millions. I am hurt by his death.”
