How a new variant of coronavirus is born, new study revealed

Scientists say tracking the virus’s host variability in individuals and populations over time can provide important clues to sites that pose benefits and harms.

Scientists from different research institutes have claimed to have discovered the mystery of the origin of the new type of coronavirus. In a research published on July 27 on the preprint server MedRxiv, scientists have said that the virus undergoes changes in the body of an infected person and once it does, it infects new people with the same changes. This results in the emergence of new variants. The team found that after sequencing about 80 percent of the genome in individuals, a new variant or strain emerged.

Scientists say that tracking the host variability of the virus in individuals and populations over time can provide important clues to sites that pose benefits and harms. According to the study, this information will be very useful for predicting the type of virus spread in the population and its infectivity. Analysis of novel coronavirus genomes combined with intra-host variability should now be the next step.

This research includes the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB), Delhi, Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Academy for Scientific and Innovative Research, Ghaziabad, National Center for Disease Researchers from Control, New Delhi and the Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur participated in the study.

Researchers analyzed samples from Covid-19 patients from two different time-periods of the epidemic.
